Are you unwilling to shift gears, change horses mid-race or take a different direction, even when you know the benefits are screaming for it? This, in spite of what others might say or think? No matter how they may feel about it? Yes, you may experience some loss of momentum, friends, positive perception, but what if it meant greater clarity, a deeper peace and an ease in achieving your ultimate goal?
This past week Warren Buffet, the 2nd richest man in the world, acknowledged “that his company, Berkshire Hathaway, would probably lose money on some of the derivatives contracts that has prompted some analysts to speculate that the world?s most famous investor has lost his touch” (New York Times, May 2, 2009). Now, you can bet that at the age of 78 Warren (yes, we’re on a first name basis) is still willing to change direction regardless of the analysts, newspapers or opinion editors at the New York Times or the Wall Street Journal. Why? Besides the fact that he’s good at what he does, he knows that with each choice comes greater clarity about what is better for his company. And to think about NOT changing would ensure he becomes far less than #2 in the future. You can imagine how much grief he’d get from Bill! (Gates, that is)
If you look back over your life and career, you will likely find that you have come across an idea to make your life easier, smoother and move you closer to your goals, but may have likely hesitated. You started thinking, what would so and so think or do? How would I or this look to the others? I’ll be thought of differently if I do it! What was the result of that torture? Looking back, did it really make a difference? And if it did, what would you now do differently?
I once heard someone say, it’s amazing how much we think that other people are thinking about and talking about us. Believe it or not, people are much more consumed with their own lives, their own struggles and their own choices. How interesting it is for us to think that they would or should be more concerned about the choices we make. See what I’m saying?
So if you’re moving along a path or pursuing your goal and you get some great insight be it through a conversation that triggers a new thought, a book that gives you a new, fresh approach or you just get a gut feeling that inspires you; don’t discount it! And if it feels good or exciting, certainly explore it. How? Talk to some trusted friends, write about it in a journal or sit quietly and simply ask for inspiration! But above all, let yourself become fuller, richer and more joyful with the newness and freshness of opportunity through change. The possibilities are truly your preview to greatness! Your next steps: In coaching, there is a term called “inquiry”. That means, asking question(s) you spend time thinking about as a means of opening up to greater clarity around a situation. I’m leaving you with 3!
- Where are you letting other opinions keep you from moving forward?
- What new insights, inspirations have you received to change a current approach? Did you ignore them, stuff them or poo poo them?
- What’s holding you back from your possibilities?your greatness?
