You said “I had not the greatest day today,
And it was nice to say ‘iloveyou’ to someone.”
So I held you close and murmured
I lovelovelove you
Until the velvet night sky was full of stars.
If I were a ball of colored energy
I would say “penny for your thoughts”
And you would tell me everything
On your mind, in your heart, from your soul
And the world would explode in vibrance
Painting rainbows in the sky.
You say I’m the most beautiful distraction
That you’ve ever been distracted by
So I give you my brightest smile
Because I know the real distraction is you.
You put your hand to your chest
Saying, “There’s this glowing feeling,
And I don’t know what to do with it.”
I smile and just soak in the feeling
Like the bright rays of summer sun.
I’ve always wanted to be as bright as you.
I keep asking you if there’s anything I do
That bothers you or makes you lose your
Beautiful smile. And you never hesitate;
The answer is always “no, never.”
And you’re right; I never give myself enough credit.
I’ve often told you that I could sit here
And listen to your beautiful voice for hours.
You always laugh and tell me, “Well, I’m sure
That I could fill those hours with the things
That I love about you.”
You told me once that before you were walking
In shoes made from poured concrete
Rooted firmly into the unforgiving ground.
“But now that I have you,” you said, “I’ve loosed the ties
And now I’m falling upwards.”
I’m still laughing about the day you said
That I looked like an acorn in a strange personality way
And I never did figure out what you meant by that.
But it was funny all the same.
“Let’s not say goodbye, let’s say something
A bit less… ending.”
That’s what you said on the phone tonight.
So I laughed and replied, “I’ll see you soon.”
And then you told me that you loved me
So much, and you would forever.
How could I say goodbye to you then?
“I never want to let you go…”
“You’ll never have to.”
